Finding the Right Surgeon

Postby cloud » Sun 09 Oct 2011 2:00 pm

Has anyone any tips/suggestions on how to find the best/most suitable surgeon to do a graft?

I'm nearing the time where a graft is the only option available but given my circumstances I want to make sure I find a top surgeon to do the procedure.

How did everyone else settle on a surgeon they were comfortable with? Is it just a matter of word of mouth and referrals pointing you in the right direction?

Hi Cloud,
If you've read the latest newsletter we sent out to members this week, you'll have seen that Professor Buckley, who spoke at our AGM in March, felt that a surgeon needs to be carrying out 50+ transplant procedures a year 'to retain the best possible comination of clinical judgment, precision and dexterity'. You can be pretty sure that the ophthalmologists working at the big UK eye hospitals where they see a lot of people with KC are doing that many grafts. So that's one criterion to use.
All the best if you do decide to go ahead.
Anne

Hi Anne,

Yes, I was at that AGM and I remember that being said. 50+ DALK transplants a year would be a must.

But I'm sure beyond that there must be a variance in expertise/skill.

Is there any other criteria people have used in the past? Or is it a matter of finding a surgeon that you feel comfortable with?
