Scleral lenses and comfort

Postby Nigel Brodt-Savage » Sat 12 Feb 2011 2:19 pm

Good afternoon,

I've been trialling scleral lenses (soft contact lens with RGP center, I think they're called scleral lenses from the description my apologises if they aren't) for the past month or so and whilst I've only been wearing them at weekends the one thing that is a bit annoying (and what's preventing me from wearing them during work days) is whilst the right eye is fine (fit wise), I barely feel it, the left is uncomfortable after 5 or so hours and vision progressive gets worse through the day. I think this is because it's not stable on the eye.

Is it unreasonable to expect the optom to be able to get the same level of stability and comfort in both eyes? If the left eye was as comfortable as the right eye I'd be happy but because the left seems so difficult (comfort wise, also inserting it, right contact lens often goes in without any problems at all, but the left generally takes a few tries, including having to take it out and put it back in.) I'm not comfortable wearing them every day.

To be fair to the optom I've not been able (yet) to wear them for any length of time before visiting the optom so they have not seen what the fit is like after an hour, I have an appointment in early March and will put them in in the morning before the appointment.

Also, whilst outside vision is generally fine (although I need to buy shades, probably as much because I'm so use to wearing glasses as also because I find the sun a bit too bright) indoors with the lights the vision can get get specular / streaky, especially around the periphery of sight, is this to be expected?

Previously I wore RGPs but found that after a couple of months wearing them all the time, a full work day was asking too much, they also had a habit of falling out so I only wore them for airsoft skirmishing.

Regards

Nigel

Welcome to the forum. In my view it is probably not unreasonable to expect an optometrist at least to try to get equivalent correction and comfort in each eye, even if their effort is not rewarded with success.

every good wish
