Freedom Pass / Prevention from getting a driving licence

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has any recent knowledge of this. I recently became aware of the Freedom Pass and am interested in applying for it. As I'm not on the partially blind registrar I'd have to go down the 'non-permitted driving licence' route.

I have never driven before and for the past 10 years have never considered driving due to my Kerataconus. However, I know that technically my eye-sight while aided with a scleral lens is just above legal limits but this doesn't take into account my field of vision (i've one amblyopic eye), my bad reaction to bright lights (sun light/car lights) and the continuous chance of my vision blurring at any time due to an issue with my amidose solution which randomly happens a lot these days. I know there is a section on the form with deals with whether I feel that driving would pose a danger to others (which is exactly the reason why I've never attempted driving) but I don't know how much weight they give to this.

Does anyone know if this would be an issue then? And if not. how exactly do I go about getting written confirmation from my optometrist.

Why not write to the DVLA 'Medical Group' setting out your condition and explaining that you need them to let you know whether or not you would be considered safe to drive. You will have to give your consultant's name and give them permission to contact him or her.

If they say you are not eligible for a driving licenses, you use their letter to pursue your interest in a pass.

My neighbour has a Freedom Pass due to epilepsy and she only filled the form in and no one questioned what she had put on it. She did have to complete another form so that she could use the pass at peak times so that she could get to work, so if you get the pass, this might be something extra to consider.
