Breaking in new lenses Jack Allen and Scleral

Postby Anna Mason » Thu 16 Sep 2010 1:48 pm

Can I just say EEARGH! I hate getting used to new lenses.

I have recently had a refit of the Scleral for my left eye and it is a smidge bigger than the old scleral but needs a pound of Cadburys Dairy Milk and 3 stiff whiskys to keep me occupied. Unfortunatley I cannot use this standard therapy as I have tablets I cant drink with and I am trying not to gain anymore weight.

It also requires a crowbar to remove it. (If you are new to sclerals dont be put off I may be embellishing the truth slighltly but I do hate getting used to a lens change.

So thats my left eye sitting here begging me to go for the whisky and chocolate prescription.

Meanwhile my right eye is used to its Softperm which with a few prescription changes and the odd hiccup it has been used to for 16 years. Now that Softperms have been discontinued(which I discovered when I tried to order my replacement) I have just literally 2 hours ago received my first ever Jack Allen Flex Edge.

The box says disinfect thoroughly so the only way to stop me trying it too soon is to tuck it up for the day with a good dose of Aosept. So thats overnight Fizzing and then try it out tomorrow.

So heres a Quandary no alcohol and no chocolate so do I continue to wear my old right lens and break the new kid in my left eyey in first. Do I go for broke and try both new lenses at once? This is bound to be a dodgy strategy as it will require a lot of pacing up and down teeth grinding and potentially some major sitting on hands!!

Anna,

I recently got a new pair of corneal lenses which are of a slightly bigger diameter than the previous pair and tried to wear both in at the same time. The left lens is a bit tight so is difficult to get out so I'm fairly sure it doesn't fit properly, but I'm not sure about the right lens. Because my wear time was reduced with both lenses I reverted to the previous pair to allow my eyes to recover. Now they've recovered I'll try the right lens again to see how it works.

So if I were you, I think I'd try one lens at a time as both your new lenses are quite a bit different from the previous pair.

This is a bit of a 'do as I say' rather than a 'do as I do'!

Good Luck!

Lia

While chatting to my sister on the phone the startling realisation dawned on me that now with my new pairing I will have one eye bigger than the other and the smaller of the two will also be bluer!!

Ah well maybe I will ignore what it says on my tablets and go for whisky and chocolate!!

As regards the chocolate nd whisky therapy:
I'm sure they will do far more good than many other medically-approved treatments!
In fact, in some of the long hours I've spent sitting around in hospital waiting rooms, I've come to the conclusion that a good cup of tea from the Friedns' of... cafe bar is likelyt o do more good than the medics I'm waiting for.
Last time I was in an Eye-related A&E, the first person who saw me insisted on going through this questionnaire about how much I dranka nd smaoke and whether I wanted any help to quit smoking/reduce alcohol consumption, and if I wanted advice on healthy eating and getting more exercise.
Told hi I've never smoked, hardly drink any more cos of my new asthma meds, and would love to have the muscle=-strangth to do the exercise before me (working in a stable yard) that needed doing, had his hospital not wrecked my health with a disastrous eye op.
Then - eventually! - got "walked round" to one of the main clinics - where I was told it would be rather a wait as consultant wasn't there yet. SO popped round to cafe to get a tea and nibbles and hot footed back 3 minutes later to find I'd already been called by nice young man assistant.
Proceded to consume same in between him taking stitches out.
He agreed entirely about healing properties of Nice Cup of Tea.
then said he always thought a Twix bar was the ideal food as it contain all the major food groups.
??
Chocolate, bisvuit and toffee.
Ah, of course! SO all I need is a bottle of Guinness for a complete diet.
Errrr - what was that I just said to the guy in A&E?- hardly ever drank, last alcool was a glass of wine with Christas dinner....???

Hey Anna,

I'm a softperm user of 7 years and just discovered they've been discontinued (or at least not stocked by CIBA) here as well, from what my optometrist is telling me they're still available in the US, but with a 2-3 week lead time. Will let you know if/when they arrive.
I remember trying Jack Allen lenses a while ago but they were just far too think and wide, how have they been for you?

Thanks,

Hayden

Hiya thats Spooky I was just about to post. I am not getting on very well with Jack Allen lens it feels as if the soft skirt isnt soft enough and I think it may be moving each time I blink.

I have spoken to the Eye Hospital and they are getting some Synergeyes in a couple of weeks so in the meantime I am wearing an old Softperm double cleaned and disinfected as I never throw them away just in case.

On the subject of Softperm I am told they are not making them anymore and that I shoudlnt wear for more than 6 hours which is a tad depressing as its my 'good' eye.

Meanwhile i have been trying to get used to my larger scleral in my left eye. On my Bathroom Window I have more contact lenses than you can shake a stick at.

A replacement softperm that was in my file but has been in my hospital file since May 09 so is way out of date, My old softperm which is showing signs of the soft skirt breaking away and my new Jack Allen. Then my left eye has my old scleral my new scleral and my old spare scleral to choose from.

I know lots of people are having far more issues than mine to contend with but I am having a bit of an 'Annus Horribilis' and messing around with my eyesight is so tiring and depressing when the rest of life already has me dragged pretty far down.
