What questions to ask

Postby sarah b » Mon 30 Aug 2010 3:34 pm

Hi there, my son was diagnosed with KC in April 2009, he s currently wearly glasses for Reading and computer. We ve finally got a follow up appointmet on weds (after 6 cancelled appts) and I m just wondering what kind of questions we need to ask the consultant? When we told he had this, i didn t really know what to say as we d never heard of it! Obviously we want to know how fast it's degenerating? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks a worried mum!

Hi Sarah,
If your son is getting good vision with glasses just for reading and computer work and it's over a year since diagnosis, then it sounds as though his KC is staying mild and not progressing much if at all. The consultant should have the readings taken a year ago so will be able to tell you more. But if he's managing well with his specs, then it sounds as though there's no reason to change to contact lenses or be thinking of any other treatment options. With luck, he may prove to be one of the people for whom KC stays mild. Let us know how you get on.
Anne

Hi Anne thanks for the reply, we went to the hospital today, and came out feeling none the wiser really! He had the photographs done of his eyes and there is a slight change in the right eye, he told us to keep in contact with our opticians , and if he needed contacts and there wasn t anyone to fit them they could refer us to one at the Heath hospital! When I asked if he now had to pay for glasses and eye tests now he's 18, he said he didn't know!! And to ask the opticians!

He also mentioned the crosslinking! To see if the doctor we saw last time had mentioned it! So we don t know if we should be thinking about That too! And we re to go back in 9 to 10 months! So I guess it's back to the opticians!

Guess I need to read some more!!

Sarah
