Hello there just went for a consultation for laser eye surgery and walked out being referred and told I have keratoconus. I gotta be honest I'm a bit scared about the future . I am 35 and have worn specs for about20 years and I really didn't realise I had a problem. I'm just now gonna worry until I get my nhs consultation so I can actually talk to somebody.

If the first intimation you got of your keratoconus was when you went for a laser consultation in your mid 30's then it is likely that your condition has already stabilized and it may never need any more management than the wearing of contact lenses; so the general advice we give to people just diagnosed fits your situation perfectly

DON'T PANIC

But, do let us know how you get on with your ophthalmology consult.

Thanks for your reply it's funny now I've been told I've got it I start thinking about the times when my eyes have been sore and some of the headaches I've had and me being sensitive to light is all down to this. Before I was told I just got on with it and didn't think anything of it. Sorry to be naive but I haven't got anyone to talk to about this are the contacts only rigid ones cause I've heard they are quite painful.

Actually rigid contact lenses can be very comfortable, but the aim of your fitter will be to find the optimum lens for you; most will try first to fit RGP lenses, but if they don't work out there are several different sorts of lens and lens combinations that can be tried.

What level of vision do you get with glasses? If it is very good then most optoms won't bother with contact lenses and leave you with glasses.

Most laser clinics when they discover a person that has KC and has been living fine with glasses is because the laser clinic has far more advanced equiment than you average high street optometrist. So you may be what is commonly know as sub-clinical KC. That is you have some of the clinical signs that can only be detected using this more advanced equipment.

I personally think my vision with my glasses is pretty good the only thing I can think of is I get a little glow around lights not streamers just a small glow around them I just thought that was my glasses and sometimes my eyes get a bit sore but I thought that was just tiredness I also occasionally have to blink a couple of times to focus. I know I can't be sure at what stage I'm at until I see the consultant but thanks for all your advice you sure have calmed me down as I had got myself into a bit of a state over the last couple of days. I was worried about losing my job. Thanks again .Scott.
