I just want some clarification as to the availability of Intacs on the NHS.
My current north west hospital has little idea about KC, let alone being up to date on the various treatments available nowadays - they think that it is either contact lenses or graft.... Well it was last time i was there, however i have been moved to another consultants clinic for my next appointment.
I have just had CXL completed privately on my left eye, and been told that the eye is suitable for intacs. however i am loathe to pay privately for treatment that is available on the NHS. However i am just wanting clarification from your good selves as to something i think it correct. As my hospital dont provide the treatment I can request that they transfer me to the care of another hospital that does carry out the treatment for my KC and the option of intacs. Can anyone suggest hospitals that they are aware of (preferably) in the north west area that do carry out the intacs procedure.
I dont get on with contact lenses as they just dry my eyes out, leaving them red and very sore and not allowing enough oxygen to the eye. I have tried various different contact lenses and the ones that dont cause this problem dont give me any useable vision - which doesnt help when i can get vision in glasses for my right eye.

Re: Clarification - NHS & Intacs
Yes you are correct, your curent hospital can refer you to a place that does the intacs. I know in Northampton that they don't do intacs or have a contact lens clinic. 'Normal' lens fitting is contracted out locally, but more specialist lenses see patients being refered to Leicester. This also applies to intacs, that those Northampton feel are suitable get refered to Leicester. Therefore the two areas where necessary share the patient care.
As to who can perform intac surgery in the North West on the NHS I will leave for someone more local to answer.

I'm not more local, but I know we've had members who have had Intacs fitted at St Paul's in Liverpool and also in Sheffield. And I'm pretty sure someone told me that Manchester Royal Eye Infirmary has started doing Intacs as well which would be the nearest one for you.
