Keratoconus: Yes, I have KC

A Newbie

Postby Jackie21-04 » Sun 07 Feb 2010 1:19 pm

Hello everyone

I've been having problems for the past few months with my left eye not being as good as my right, I was due an eye test and went yesterday only for the optician to tell me that, after a longer than normal test that I had KC!..

It was a bit unnerving when after continually putting different lenses in the glasses, I couldn't see any improvement when asked. I've never had problems reading the last line of the card let alone the 3rd one down!!

I duelly went home and did the 'google' search and found your forum/website and it was very helpful in explaining the condition. Just before Christmas (whilst standing at the busstop!!) my left eye for no reason started to run, it was really strange and it was as though I'd peeled an onion? I told the optician about this and he made no connection, however after researching, could this be part of the condition?
I have also been a hayfever sufferer (and allergic to certain pet fur)since the age of 4 and although some years the sneezing is not as bad as others, the eyes have ALWAYS been irritated

I ended up with an updated pair of reading glasses and the optician did say that it wasn't worth me being referred at this stage and I've got to go back in twelve months instead of the normal 2 years.

Any extra advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Jackie

Welcome to the forum. You mention an optometrist but I wonder, have you seen an ophthalmologist yet (a specialist eye doctor). If not you should to to your GP and explain what the optometrist said and ask for a referral to your nearest specialist cornea unit.

Your ophthalmologist may have some suggestions to make about treatments for your KC and other associated infections or abrasions to your eye. The hospital will also be able to put you in touch with an optometrist who has experience and is skilled at fitting lenses to keratoconic eyes.

Every good wish

Andrew
