15 month Transplant Update

Postby tneedham » Wed 27 Jan 2010 1:29 pm

So, its been 15 months since my full thickness cornea transplant, and i thought that an update would be good as there is not as much good news on the forum as bad news......

2 weeks ago i had 9 of my stitches removed leaving me with just 6, 2 hours after the 'operation' my vision had improved to near enough perfect :D ......another 2 hours later and my cornea had continued to 'relax' into shape reducing my vision to worse than it was before  this is where it has stayed since.
I have quite bad ghosting and my astigmatism seems to have switched axis completely, if i look through my glasses back to front and upside down, it clears up the vision quite a bit.
I have been off work for 2 weeks as i have been unable to see very well at all.

Today i went for my follow up consultation and all the news is excellent.

Although the vision is bad, everything else is good. tha cornea has grafted very well and the knit is 'perfect'. the 6 stitches, although still distorting the vision are very well balanced, my topography showed good signs, although i have no idea what it all means.
well now i am able to get re-prescribed with some interim glasses whilst my cornea settles fully, after the 4-6 weeks i can then get re-prescribed again if needed OR..... :D He says that the shape of my cornea is now spherical enough that he is very happy for me to be in a regular, run of the mill, soft contact lens 8) this will give me that best vision possible for my eye, awesome.....

The next steps for me are the rest of the stitches out in october, and then the ball is in my court as to either have further vision correction done in the left eye, or begin the process for the right eye to have a transplant.....and the process starts all over again.

Anyway. as i said at the start, as people tend not to write so much about the sucess stories, i thought i would try to give a brighter outlook to those people coming up to having a transplant.

:D :D :D :D

Small update from earlier on........

My prescriptuion was...SPH +2.00 CYL -5.50 AXIS 120

And is now...............SPH 0.00 CYL -3.00 AXIS 55

I cant believe it could change quite so much, over 60 deg!!!!! So i'm much better off for not having to get special orders in etc.....i can get it done from stock lenses at a normal price in a 1 hour service i can now even order from the cheap as chips net sites.
There is so some light at the end of the tunnel, its still a bit blurry, but its there....

As an added bonus.
My boss won't let me back to work until he has a report from the consultant making sure i am fit for work, i am guessing to cover thier back in case of mishap.
This involves our HR to ask our parent companies Occupational Health to ask me to sign and return a letter of concent which they will forward on to and ask my consultant to return a clinical report to them, which they will send to our HR and only then will they tell me i can come into work again :D
Thats gotta take a few days huh?

Tom
