Hi All
My second post of the day! I've been advised by 2 consultants...one in Scotland and one in Manchester that corneal segments may be the way to go for me. I've got sufficient corneal thickness etc. Both advise that I'll still require lenses following the procedure although my corneas will be flatter allowing for better lens fit.
One advises Intacs...the other advises Kera Rings.
Really interested to hear anyone's experiences of either...
Regards
David

David.
I am guessing you were offered INTACS in Scotland where this procedure is available widely on the NHS.
INTACS is well regarded and seems to offer a good prospect of success. Also, if things do go wrong the procedure is reversible.
All the best.

Re: Intacs/Kera Rings
Hi
Yes the Intacs were talked about in Scotland however I get the impression that a lot of the procedures that success rates are based on are in patients that dont have keratoconus...although that impression may be wrong. My Health Board dont offer CXL yet and I'm told this can be beneficial 6 months or so after the segments are implanted...hence my private consultation to investigate that combination a bit more...
Havent come across any posts on here from people that have had the procedure howerer today's been a bad eye day and I may have missed some with my nose on the screen!

Re: Intacs/Kera Rings
Good luck hunting! There have been some very positive posts about INTACS for KC, and at this years conference we heard from two ophthalmogists of their success offeri g this treatment to patients with keratoconus.
I don't know of any Scottish Health Board that offers CXL as a routine treatment for KC, although there may be some involved in clinical trials.
All the best.

Dave - you will find Intacs experiences if you use the search facility on this forum and search on 'Intacs'. And the DVD of our 2005 conference includes talks from two of our members who had Intacs fitted. If you e-mail your postal address to anne@keratoconus-group.org.uk I can send you a copy.

Re: Intacs/Kera Rings
Hi Dave,
I have pretty severe Kerratoconus in both eyes and last year inserted intacs in conjunction with Corneal Collagen Crosslinking With Riboflavin into my right eye. As a result my best corrected vision in my right eye has gone up tremendously and I can now use glasses without the need for contact lenses. But I find my eye is a lot more sensitive to sunlight. I just spoke to my doctor last week about geting intacs for my left eye and he told me that I would be better of getting Kera rings for my right eye as this procedure while newer is just as good if not better then Intacs, he also thinks that my eye will not be as sensitive to sunlight at the end of it.
I am now going to get Kera rings for my left eye next week and depending on the result I may remove the intact from my right eye and replace it with a Kera ring.
Whatever you decide I personally have found it was more then worth getting Intacs for my eye as the difference in my best corrected vision is a lot.
Regards,
Josef

Hi Josef
Thank you for sharing your Intacs experience. Glad it's made such a difference for you as I hope the Kerarings do too if you proceed with that. Certainly gives me a positive reference for my research file!
