sight improvement after a graft
Six months in from my corneal graft and still have not got a lens in my glasses. Is this usual? Can still only see top letter of eye chart.

Re: sight improvement after a graft
Hi bevlin,
COngratulations on getting to 6 months post-graft.
You're doing better than me - I'm 10 months post-graft and I can't even see the top letter.
I was told to expect a year to 18 months before getting correction for the grafted eye - not because it is impossible to correct it before then, but because the eye is still changing shape, so as soon as you'd got new glasses made or, or new contact lenses ordered, and you'd be needed new new ones because the eye had changed and the prescription needed changing.
It is possible to get scleral lenses well before then - because there is a big reservoir of tears between the lens and the eye surface which can accommodate changes in eye shape.
I got fitted for a new scleral lens for the grafted eye ..... but then it developed glaucoma too, and the anti-glaucoma drops make the eye so itchy I don't want to be putting a contact lens in it too often.
In fact, because the eye is changing shape, when the new lens arrived, the first thing I had to do was rushout and get a pair of cheapo supermarket reading specs - it seems my arms had shrunk in the wash that morning! ANd I need new reading specs already for when I do get the new lens in.
The trouble with rapidly changing eyes/glasses prescriptions is that getting new glasses/lenses every few weeks gets rather expensive - and people can get pretty pee'd off with another bill every few weeks when they only just paid the last one.
But if you can afford that, and would rather get some benefit from your graft even at a bit of a cost, then do have a chat about it at your next appointment.
Good luck.
Oh, there's also a factor on how well the graft is healing as to whether it is wise to fit a new contact lens at the moment - but only the specialists who've actually seen your eye would know about that.
