Interesting Question: I Have KC, I have the RGP Lens.....

Postby saibharadwaj » Sun 02 Mar 2008 7:00 am

Hi,

I've just tried to go for an eye checkup instead of a movie one week back. I had this thought for many days as I suffered bit pain when I see bright light, I used to see blur screen sometimes...unless I rub to get my vision correct.

Getting back to the point, I went to the eye checkup just a normal one because I had the black spots coming under my eye & the reasons I just explained above. I went to them & wasn't able to read thru my left eye. It was sighted immediately as Keretoconus suspicious & they preferred me an ORB scan. A few other junior doctors too performed the routine eye checkup before I went for ORB scan where I was confirmed of Keretoconus.

I was then given many lenses with in that specs that we get to read things there. I found that none of the lenses helped my cause for better vision especially the left eye which reads nothing except the first two lines on the board. The doctor later did some magic & put one contact lens through which I was able to read things but, with a shadowy background. I was then preferred RGP Contact Lens.

I got my RGP contact lens a few days back & after I tried to put on. I wasn't able to read things with that. I called the doctor & he had to say that I did not put it properly. I tried again & waited for 2 days....but, the vision is same with or without the lens...may be slightely better.

The real problem is not that am not able to find difference with GP lens but, a new problem started where the lens keeps slipping out, irritation around the eye (does not get red but, irritation), itching sensation irrespective of whether I have my lens on my eye / do not have it.

My questions:
-> What should I do? the vision does not show improvement after I put on lens(the same sample lens was able to see but, the new lens is just not able to)

-> Lens keep slipping out...I mean it comes out of cornea completely & gets to left or right.

-> New problem after I started wearing lens, Itching sensation + Irritation around the eye. I never had this before.

-> Did I do a right thing by going to doctor? I'm just getting a bit coward. Was it a better solution if I preferred a Movie rather than a general checkup to doctor which I did?

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I guess that the experiences you describe will chime with most of the people here. I am sorry that you are going through all this, but please do not give up. There is a lot that can be done for Keratoconus.

You do not say where you are, so please let me assume that you are somewhere in the United Kingdom.

Question 1 Go back to your Optometrist. It may be that a different lens or lens material would provide you with better correction and a more comfortable fit.

Question 2 Same answer as above.

Question 3 Yes you did the right thing by going to see your doctor. Is it your family practitioner (General Practitioner) whom you visit, or have you been referred to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist)?

Question 4 It may be that your lens is irritating your eyelid. Same answer as 1 and 2 (above)

Question 5 by going to the doctor you have put yourself in a position where you maybe able to enjoy movies more in the future!

In general, please try not to rub your eyes too much. There are many different lens types and lens materials also vary. The art of the optometrist is to find the right lens for each of us. If your optometrist is not experienced or skilled in fitting people with keratoconus, then you may be better to find one who is. If your optometrist is skilled in fitting patients with keratoconus then he or she will want to be given an opportunity to get the combination right for you.

Is your optometrist in private practice, or do you see a hospital optometrist?

All the best

Andrew
