My new rgp lenses

Postby Steven Williams » Mon 28 May 2007 10:47 pm

I am currently building up my wear time with my new lenses prescribed by Dr Cindy Tromans at MREH.

They are these

http://www.lensdynamics.com/IrregularCo ... LIntro.htm

They are both the same size, approximately 11mm diameter and have a blue tint so I´ll have to be careful I dont mix them up!

The edges are very cleverly designed. They go convex towards the edges, so there is no hard or sharp edge. The effect is that it produces a smooth skirt which floats on a surface which is probably why i can tolerate them. Not as comfortable as the mini scleral I tried though!

The big breakthrough with the lenses is they stay in position, are easy to put in and remove. Also they are large enough to be able to ue a plunger for removal.

The only negative is that the vision is not as good as the smaller rgps I have tried or the mini scleral when it was full of solution.

Hopefully some further fine tuning by Dr CT
may improve the vision further.

Its taken 3 years and I have finally found a KC expert contact lens prescriber/fitter, Dr CT. Alleluah and thanx.

With technological improvements and sharing of information, the futures looking brighter for us KCers. :D

Steven,

Good result, what is your visual aquity with the new lenses then?

As you know not uncommon to have to do fine tuning once you have got used to the lenses.

I know this is a case of teaching granny to suck eggs, but this serves as a reminder to all and for any newbies that you must remember to build the wear time slowly.

Thats a good question Gareth and one I will ask Dr CT at my next consultation in August when I should have got used to the lenses.

I asked if my corrected lens vision level was above the driving limit and was advised it was just above but alot depended on the prevailing environmental conditions!

I would have also liked to have a keractometer map my cornea before using the lenses to see if there was any further progression of the KC.

A bit negative I have found is that the lens wearing increases the natural desire to eye rub. Why is this?

What can you do to prevent you actioning this desire?

Steven,

In my experience the urge to eye rub is either down to tierdness or eye irritation.

Hopefully it is just a downside to getting used to the lenses and it will pass. If it progresses then I am afraid it is to the eye unit to make sure you do not have an eye infection or the fact thelens fit might need a minor tweak.

Beyond that I am afraid it is will power and perhaps soothing eye drops. I know many have used a cold flanel over the eyes to take the irritation away and others eye drops that have been cooled in the fridge.

In 2005 when I had lens problems I had all manner of lens fittings and topogrophy done. Good news was the KC had not changed; you do get changes between readings but only slight due to the variations in the instrument and your own health on that day. For me it was a subtle diet change made all the difference and I am on the same lenses I got in 2004.

Have a look at my response to Matthew Offerd Response, sometimes you have to go beyond just fixing the eye and look at your overall health even if you feel fine in yourself.

Well done Steven.

All the best with your lenses. I remember the long build up of wear time, but once I got to a decent day of lens wear, I was comfortably able to go about my daily round with them in and able to see well enough to drive!

I did arrange for subsequent lenses to be issued in different sizes and colours so that I did not get them mixed up. My right lens was always slightly smaller and darker than my left.
