1 month post graft

Hi people was just wondering if anyone else out there in a similar position, and how they are feeling. am having no probs at all, currently reading just below red line with pin holes. Is it ok to run and/or lift weights?

Hi Homer,

One month pst op I think most surgeons would recomend staying off the weights, not so sure about the running.

Things are vastly different from 20 yeasr ago where I was lifting bags of cattle feed and bails as part of my summer job.

The best thing is to contact the surgeon and discuss it with him/her.

Gareth is right. Unless your surgeon has told you that it is okay to get back to vigorous exercise you probably ought to wait.

Ask; what can he say?

Hey Homer,

I just had a transplant on Jan. 2. The Doctor told me on Feb. 9 that I could start excerising again at 50 percent. He said i could lift and run, but I have to take it easy. You really should ask the doctor first though.

I would take it easy if I were you mate. I was training with light to moderate weights 8 months post graft and I could notice my vision changing aswell as the sensation of my grafted eye bulging/pulsating bulging a bit. The whole point of avoiding excessive exercise is to prevent your iop getting too high. Always maintain a good breathing pattern and never hold your breath

Glad to hear everything is going so well Homer.

I understand the desire to get back to normal as soon as possible, but caution is your best bet. At this stage you wouldn't want to overdo it and end up back at stage one.

See Gareth, I'm using you as my example. You've been through two grafts without the safeguards most of us now take as normal procedure.

You're a real boost to the power of recovery. Not that I'm advocating people get careless but in a world full of complications you're the proof of the amazing way the body recovers.

Thanks Chris,

I am a firm beleiver if you are fit and healthy pre-op then the recovery is much quicker. As long as you common sense.

Before my first graft I played Rugby for the county and three teams plus the 6th Form College training 5 days per week. Even trained when I was registerd blind, although did not play. Plus before my sight let go I was rallying at club level.

Tried Karting a couple of weeks ago and in the last competition I did 2 1/2 years ago! Need to get fit again.

There was a guy Knight (not been on the forum for a year now!) who was realy into his fitness and he made a real quick recovery. Piper who post quite regular has made a speedy recovery too.

I would err on the side of caution, for the sake of a few weeks or a couple of months why risk it?
You could always do some pilates which is very good for the body [strength and suppleness] but less aerobic. Cardio fitness is easily regained, strength and suppleness can be kept ticking over with pilates
