wearing lenses and KC progression?????

Postby eman samir » Wed 31 Jan 2007 1:38 am

does KC get worse when the patients don't wear lenses for a long time?i mean for 4-6 weeks......does wearing lenses have a relation to KC progression????? also, does reading too much or working with computer for long time without lenses lead to progression of KC??????
for indeed,it is not the eyes that grow blind but it is the hearts which are within the bosoms that grow blind...

Eman,

No-one really knows for certain what causes the progression of KC, but I'm sure that none of the things you mention are a cause.

It used to be thought that wearing corneal RGPs would help to slow the progression of KC, but current thinking is that it does not. The only thing that is known to slow the progression of KC in mild cases is C3-R.

Eman

Whether it leads to the progression of KC or not, it is not a good idea to work at a vdu for a long time with no break.

Gareth will know the exact details, but I think that the rule of thumb is that you should allow yourself frequent short breaks from the computer.

In the UK regarding VDU's what the HSE give out are only 'Guide Lines'. They do however recomend frequent short breaks, so I have a timer at work set for 30 minutes and when the alarm goes, get up, put stuff in the post, all the little jobs we usually save to amke a more worthwhile task.

For me doing the little job frequently is worthwhile :D

Looking at a computer screen, reading a book or anything needing concentration makes our blink rate go down do our eye dry up. this leads to lenses becoming uncomfortable and if we do nothing about it we have a major bad eye day preventing us wear lenses for a few days or even worse a trip to the eye unit!

A dry lens will certainly not help the cornea as it moves on the cornea as there is not that lubricating layer of tears so damage could occur.
