KC Stability

Postby Matthew_ » Thu 30 Nov 2006 9:15 am

Hi everyone,
Got my rgps around a month ago and all is going well. Got up to 8 hours use daily without using any drops and just waiting for my second visit to Gartnavel for the green light to wear the lenses for longer. I cannot wear the lenses all week and normally need a couple of days without them. But hopefully my plan to enhance my workstation will mean less reliance on the lenses at work. :D
So all is well. However I have noticed on my rough and ready snellen chart on the wall that left eye (the most affected) has slipped down to 6/60 from 6/36 over the last month or so (uncorrected). Corrected I am still in for driving on the left eye at around 6/9 but this is a slight slip too from 6/6. My right eye continues to do OK at around 6/36 uncorrected and a 6/6 maybe even 6/5 with the lens.
Obviously my KC is mild and I do not have much to worry about, the lenses are doing their job. However, I am mildly concerned about the slippage in the left eye.
I go back to the lens clinic next week and will mention this to them but I am not sure whether they have a view on VA without the lenses? Are they just interested in the fit? I have been discharged from the opthomolgist since the lenses are working at the last check.

Matthew

When you measured this uncorrected VA did you do it first thing in the morning, where you didnt have lenses in your eyes for upto 12 hours before?

If you did, than there is a slight chance the KC has got worse; however I guess youd need to see if its consistent by doing it over a number of days (or just got a topography done and compare)

If the KC has got worse, than more than likely you will notice this effect in the contact lens....as in the wearing time could go down, redness, etc etc...

The fact that you can still get use out of the lenses is a sure good sign...but it could also mean that the "give" that was present in the lens fitting may now be taken up.....kinda really hard to say......but Id def mention this during your next appointment.....

Matthew,

Your lenses will put slight pressure on the cone and the time overnight without lenses is not enough for the cornea to relax to its pre lens position which is why I hade to go atleast 48 hours between wearing an RGP lens and the Kerasoft fitting.

So your KC may well be stable, once you start wearing lenses, unless you go a couple of days without lenses and test your vision, checking the corrected vision is then the best guide as to how stable your KC is.

The ultimate test is topography or a proper test at the eye clinic.

Thanks a lot guys!
I checked again this morning and my right eye was a bit better at 6/24, hoorah! Left eye still at 6/60 though. I am going to leave my lenses out for the weekend and then try again monday morning. Then I'll let the clinic know when I see them Monday afternoon.
Thanks very much for your help. :o :o :o :o
Love the xmas stuff!
