Gareth

The idea of requiring a minimum "uncorrected" vision for various sorts of driving license seems to be becoming popular.

It is already a requirement for HGV driving, and a requirement for ordinary driving licesnses in Northern Ireland; you need a minimum uncorrected standard to race, and I guess it will not be too long before the minimum uncorrected requirement filters into the regular requirement for all DVLA licenses.

...and if that happens then God help us all. I guess my wife will become the chauffeur!

Gareth...your lens wear times are about the same as mine...and yes I have to have occasional Systane top-ups too!

In addition I try to have a rest from lenses once a week. Glad to hear I'm doing something right.

Good news all round Gareth. Pleased for you.

Paul

I agree, but it is the way the sea seems to be running. My wife will be back to driving me everywhere, too.

Won't be the first time for me Andrew.

Lost my licence because of an epileptic fit back in the early 90's. Lost it for nearly 4 years (you get less for drink driving)....can't say it was a time I particularly enjoyed.

Anne; good luck for Moorfields, is this Kens surgery your are going to for sclerals?

As for minumum uncorrected sight requirments for racing is quite understandable when you think there may be occasions after a crash that you need to cross the circuit to safety or in rallying where you may need to flag down another competitor.

Does help if you can see the car approaching at speed otherwise things can get very messy and terminal!

I don't really think they'll ever do a minimum vision standard for normal driving, too many people would be deprived of their licences! What could be done is that people are required to keep a spare pair of glasses in the car at all times, as they do in some countries. It is a very valid point that if you can't see without glasses, then what do you do if your glasses break?

But, Lynn, they already have a minimum uncorrected standard in Northern Ireland. It wouldn't be a big adjustment to bring it over the sea.

I think I agree that they are more likely to intoduce it first for new applications, and then roll it out to those reapplying at their 70th birthday and so on back into the whole population.

Andrew,

Are you sure? I didn't think so and i just double checked the 2003 NI regs and it says minimum standard corrected vision. Have I missed something here?

Could you tell what the minimum uncorrecteds are?

Lynn
